Keep Your Boat Coolers Full of Ice!
Madison Tripp
Ice is one of the most important things to have on hand when out for a day of fishing, since keeping your fish fresh is essential. Finding yourself without enough ice when the fish start coming in, will most certainly cut a successful day short. So, before you leave the dock, make sure you have packed your cooler with plenty of ice that will last the entire day.
The longest lasting ice would be ice in block form, however most people will get a little of both – block ice and bagged ice cubes. If you are planning to go out for large fish such as dolphin (mahi) blocks of ice will come in handy, especially if the fish is to be stored in a large cooler or fish box built into the boat. If you cannot find block ice (most marinas and bait shops have them) then plan on using plenty of bagged ice!
Ice cubes or crushed ice works well with smaller fish such as snapper, grouper and tuna. Remember that with fresh-caught blackfin tuna, results are best if gutted and bled immediately after catching and chilled quickly with crushed ice placed inside the belly and covered with ice in the cooler.
